Why is your initial appointment 90 minutes?
In our experience 45-60 minutes does not allow adequate time to assess the specific strengths and challenges our clients face. We want to collaborate with each client to create an individualized treatment plan that is efficient and effective. The goal is to use our time together wisely to see results sooner. Since we specialize in helping those in relationships who are experiencing adverse challenges, we know that we must dedicate additional time to understanding how we can help.
What Should We Expect At The First Appointment?
Glad you asked! A whole page has been dedicated to answering this for you. Please select "Your First Session" from the menu above or click here.
Do you provide longer sessions if needed?
Yes, some couples and poly relationships who feel they are in crisis opt for longer sessions in the beginning of therapy as a means to accelerate treatment. This is also known as intensive relationship therapy. This is a great option to help partners work through emergent challenges. We have found that some situations (like immediately after the discovery of an affair) require accelerated therapy. Most couples and poly relationships find a few longer sessions in the beginning help to expedite the treatment process and help them feel better sooner. The sessions tend to last 3-6 hours and the fees are prorated based on the fee schedule. This approach is considered after a couple has completed their initial assessment.

What is the Gottman method?
The Gottman Method was created by Dr. John and Dr. Julie Gottman and has become the "gold standard" in marital and relational therapy because it has been researched for decades and is very effective. This approach addresses conflict management, communication, empathy, trust, commitment, and a host of other topics. It is a very well-rounded and highly respected approach in the community of expert relationship therapists.

What is Emotionally Focused Couples' Therapy?
Emotionally Focused Therapy is less of a way to do counseling and more of a way to think about a relationship. This theory helps partners identify their partner's true experience of the relationship and how that informs their behavior. It is a way to learn empathy for one another. This approach is complementary to the Gottman method. EFCT is more resistant to the test of time than any other research-supported approach; having effect decades after counseling has ended.

Do you take insurance?
We do not accept direct payments from insurance providers. We are passionate about your privacy and want to offer the most effective, compassionate, personalized treatment possible. In many cases this philosophy directly conflicts with the medical model of insurance companies.
Marriage, couple, premarital, and relationship counseling are not considered medically necessary; therefore not covered by most major insurance carriers. Ethically, insurance companies should not be billed for the mental health concern of one person if you are coming for marriage/relationship therapy. An insurance company requires one partner to have a mental health diagnosis (i.e. depression, anxiety, conduct disorder) that will become part of their permanent medical file. Relationship therapy does not meet the requirement of a mental health diagnosis. We provide documentation (a Superbill) monthly with all of the necessary information for you to complete a claim to request insurance reimbursement should you choose to request it.
Acceptable payments include: cash, credit/debit cards, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA) cards and Health Savings Accounts (HSA) Cards.
